Most Christmas playlists are as cheesy as the cheese fondue set your aunt bought you last Christmas. Yes yes, on the one hand they’re meant to be cheesy. But on the other hand, they don’t have to be. We decided to put together a Christmas playlist that breaks the cheesy Christmas playlist stereotype. We’re quite proud of what we managed to pull together and think you’ll feel quite proud too - when playing the below 20 songs for your friends and family this silly season. You will NOT find Mariah Carey on this Christmas playlist. But you will find some absolute classics that you’ll find yourself listening to long after the December holidays. And you’ll also find that every song will lift your weary tired spirit, faster than your boss can say “No thirteenth cheques this year people”.
It’s beginning to look like Christmas - Bing Crosby
Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer - Jack Johnson (Who knew a Christmas song could be relaxing?)
Dominick the Donkey - Lou Monte (The kids will LOVE this one)
A Holly Jolly Christmas - Burl Ives (A happy song that everyone will want to dance to)
White Christmas - Bing Crosby (Just pretend he’s referring to the white waves that lap the beach)
Let it snow, Let it snow Let it snow! Frank Sinatra (Well, that’s not going to happen. But this song will make you feel like you’re smack bang in the middle of a 90s romcom)
Rockin around the Christmas tree - Brenda Lee (Also got that 90s romcom feeling)
Silver Bells - Stevie Wonder (You will not believe how young Stevie sounds in this 1967 classic. Such a sweet song!)
Jingle Bell Rock - Bobby Helms (Again, that warm and fuzzy 90s romcom feeling)
Happy Christmas - John Lennon
The Christmas Song - Nat King Cole (This one evokes the image of Disney characters, such a warm lovely happy song)
River - James Taylor (A soothing track with soothing acoustic guitar)
Oi to the world - No Doubt (Before Gwen Stefani was, well, Gwen Stefani)
Christmas wrapping - The Waitresses (Such a cute song!)
Do they know it’s Christmas? Band Aid (If you like 80s music, you’re going to LOVE this one)
The Chipmunk Song - Alvin and the chipmunks (because no Christmas playlist is complete without it)
Mele Kalikimaka - Bing Crosby (Mele Kalikimaka is Hawaiian for “Happy Christmas.” South Africans will relate to the lyrics: “Here we know that Christmas will be green and bright. The sun will shine by day and all the stars at night.”)
Step into Christmas - Elton John
Baby it’s cold outside - Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, featuring Julie Davis.
You’re a mean one Mr Grinch - From dr Seuss how the Grinch stole Christmas (let’s hope nobody does the same this year!)
The above 20 songs can be found on Apple Music, Google Play Music, Spotify or Youtube. Happy Listening! Or Mele Kalikimaka, number 17 on the playlist ;) Get downloading now, unless of course you’d rather listen to Boney M!
