What is tinnitus?

Tinnitus is when someone hears a ringing or buzzing sound in the ear which is not heard by anyone else and is not caused by an external sound. Tinnitus is a very common condition which can occur in people of all ages. About 30% of people will experience tinnitus at some point in their lives. Although tinnitus is common in people who have a hearing loss, it can also occur in people with normal hearing. It is not a disease but a symptom of an underlying condition. While tinnitus itself is not typically harmful, it can be very bothersome, especially if it's persistent or severe.
