What is sudden hearing loss?
Sudden hearing loss is the sudden occurrence of reduced hearing which was not present before. This can happen to anyone at anytime and usually occurs in one ear over a very short period of hours or days. People might notice it when they wake up, or find a change in their hearing when they listen to music or make a phone call. Some people may experience a loud popping sound before their hearing reduces.
What causes sudden hearing loss?
Sudden hearing loss can be caused by a number of reason, including:
- Ear wax build up
- Ear infection
- Stroke
- Meningitis
- Side effects of certain medication
- Sudden very loud noise
Treatment for sudden hearing loss
Treatment for sudden hearing loss will depend on its cause. Some cases may resolve on their own after a couple of weeks for no apparent reason, but you should seek medical advice as soon as possible because early treatment may increase the likelihood of recovery.
