What is ear wax?
Ear wax is a waxy substance secreted in the ear canal and helps to protect the ear from dirt, insects and bacteria. It is normal to have ear wax in your ears. However, if there is a build-up of too much ear wax, then this can cause a wax plug.
What causes ear wax?
Earwax is produced naturally by glands in the ear canal as part of the ear's self-cleaning and protective mechanism. Its production is influenced by several factors such as genetics, environmental factors that stimulate production as a protective mechanism, activity level and age.
Ear wax symptoms
Symptoms of excessive ear wax or a wax plug include the following:
- Decreased hearing
- Dizziness
- Can be painful
- A blocked feeling in the ear
- Tinnitus (hearing a ringing sound) in the ear
Treatment for ear wax
Ear wax can easily be removed by your Spec-Savers audiologist or Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist. Ear wax build-up can also be managed through the use of sprays designed to soften ear wax so that it moves out of the ear easily. It is important not to use ear buds or foreign objects in the ear as this will push the ear wax further into the ear, causing more of a blockage.
Regular eye examinations with an optometrist or ophthalmologist are essential to detect and address astigmatism, especially since visual needs can change over time. If you suspect you have astigmatism or are experiencing changes in your vision, it's recommended to consult with your trusted Spec-Savers optometrist for a comprehensive eye examination.
